    What version are you using? I'm using w3m-0.1.11-pre and it does use N
    to search backwards. Actually, it uses ? to search backwards and N to
    reverse the direction of the search, but I assume that's what you meant
    since that's also how less and vi work.

    If you wanted to change this, you wouldn't have to submit a patch, just
    put your key binding in ~/.w3m/keymap.
